Groveton ISD
INCIDENT:
60 pound Christopher failed to turn in his homework on a regular basis. He is diagnosed with ADHD. Ninety percent of the time, his homework was in his binder. One day, Christopher was sent to the office.
GISD RESPONSE:
- The principal was away and another person was asked to step in during the normal Principal's absence.
- Christopher received 2 pops, 5-10 demerits, missed recess.
PROBLEMS:
- The parents were not notified, they found out later after Christopher continued to complain that he was in pain. Upon checking there still remained 2 huge welts, this was after 5PM the evening of the pops. The welts remained for four days.
- Parents should be notified prior to any discipline of this magnitude.
- After locating the person who had administered the pops he said he had done nothing wrong and that sometimes there are bruises.
When did bruises become acceptable punishment for an uncompleted assignment?
- The parents were informed that GISD would not acknowledge their letter clearly stating that they revoke the school's authority to use corporal punishment on their children.
Parental choice in a matter like this should be honored.
